I have a couple of these little “cheats” up my sleeve for weeks when I barely have time to boil a kettle. This weekend is CRAZY busy as I am DJing at the Vintage at the Southbank festival with the Shellac Sisters. I have to leave the house in a couple of hours and I haven’t sorted out my record selection yet, OR mended the massive rip in the dress I am going to wear.
I bought two new frocks for this weekend, fabulous 1940s numbers. Last week as I was trying on the Sunday dress I managed to rip the sleeve seam in a mighty gut wrenching moment as I tried it on to see if it needed a belt. I’d never even worn it out of the house! Then on Thursday night I was wearing the Saturday dress to DJ at the Royal Academy of Arts (no less) and when bending down to get some records out of my box, did exactly the same to that one! The Sunday frock is at the menders and the Saturday frock is waiting for me to mend it. Yikes. I’d better get a move on.
So this morning I made myself a proper pot of coffee in a proper coffee pot Vincent stylie. I drink VATS of coffee every morning so it was quite nice to be refined and make it in this lovely coffee pot my ma gave me. This is from a whole set with six coffee cups, a sugar bowl and a milk jug. My mum said that she won this in a competition. There was a time when she was in a kind of competition club. There was a newsletter thing I think that tipped you off to all the good competitions that were going on and my mum won a few things. She was very good at the killer question they always had as a tie break. “Maxwell House is my favourite coffee because…” complete using 7 words or less… She told me that she’d forgotten all about entering the Maxwell House competition until this lovely coffee set arrived.
In the goodie bag from the Royal Academy there was a magazine called Artists Illustrated and I loved noseying around someone’s studio. I love pictures of rooms where writers write and studios where artists do their art. There was a picture of the artist’s bookshelf and so I thought I’d take a picture of my bedside books.
It makes me laugh what is there at the moment. The Spinster’s Bible: Delia Smith’s “One Is Fun” and my beloved Sylvia of Hollywood’s “No More Alibis” as well as the salacious “Ecstasy and Me” by Hedy Lamarr – excellent bedtime reading.

Sometimes it’s nice to have coffee or tea out of a proper cup and saucer instead of a mug. It happens less often than I’d like, though, because mugs can go in the dishwasher! I’m so lazy!
I hate when clothing has to be mended and I’m really bad about getting around to doing it. I hope your dresses are back in top condition–sounds like you’re having a busy weekend.
Aha, there is no dishwasher in the Palace of Solitude alas. Although I was very surprised to see that the man I brought home with me on Saturday night had done my washing up when I wasn’t looking on Sunday morning. Now THAT is the kind of house guest I like!
I gave up on mending dress number 2. The tailor did a great job on dress number 1 though so I guess it is another £20 to be spent on proper mending!
Weekend was ace, very busy but a LOT of fun.
I love your coffee pot and set. I drink lots of coffee too but on tea days I always brew up a giant pot of tea (warmed first) and then drink it out of my favourite teacup, off a vintage tray I found in a thrift store. Ah, the simple things…
